Cancer of the wall or body of the uterus (and not of the cervix), the endometrial cancer is an unrecognized cancer, and yet it is at 4e rank of cancers in women in France. In 2018, 8,224 new cases were diagnosed, for 2,415 deaths. Occurring regularly after the menopause, on average at the age of 68, it has the best prognosis for gynecological cancers, after breast cancer.
According to a new study, increased coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of endometrial cancer. Published in August 2022 in theAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the study involved 12,159 patients with endometrial cancer and 27,479 healthy women without cancer. Compared to women who did not drink coffee, the risk of endometrial cancer was 13% lower. And the higher the coffee consumption, the lower the risk. Indeed, it was lower by 10%, 14% and 24% among women who drank respectively one cup, between two and three, and more than four per day.
This inverse association was even higher in participants with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25, i.e. in a situation of overweight or obesity. In women with a BMI less than 25, only the highest level of coffee consumption (more than four cups per day) was associated with a significant reduction in cancer risk of the endometrium.
Results already obtained
Already in January 2022, a Chinese meta-analysis published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Research had reached similar conclusions: higher coffee consumption would be linked to a reduced risk of endometrial cancer. Of a total sample of 699,234 participants, 9,833 had endometrial cancer. The patients with the highest coffee consumption were also those who saw their risk of endometrial cancer the most reduced, by 29% compared to those with a low consumption.
Among consumers of “real” coffee (ie with caffeine), the risk was reduced by 34%, and by 35% among participants with the highest BMI. “Caffeine consumption has been shown to directly affect levels of sex hormone binding globulin. It modulates testosterone and estrogen. These hormonal changes could favorably inhibit the risk of endometrial cancer”the researchers said.
Coffee is already popular in other forms of cancer, such as melanoma, breast cancer, prostate cancer but also colon cancer, but also in the pr Prevention of heart disease, chronic disease or even liver disease.
