The tea is said to be very good for the health of your eyes. Researchers have shown that drinking a cup of tea per day will reduce the risk of glaucoma.
57.5 million people worldwide are affected by glaucoma. This eye disease causes irreversible reduction in sight. British researchers have found a way to prevent its onset: it would be enough to drink a cup of tea per day. The study they published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology shows that those who drink tea once daily have a 74% reduced risk of glaucoma compared to those who do not.
No effect with coffee or tea without caffeine
1,678 people participated in the study. For twelve months, the researchers analyzed the frequency of consumption of different drinks. They compared the health outcomes of consuming tea, coffee, iced tea, decaffeinated tea or even non-alcoholic drinks. The lower risk of glaucoma only exists with daily tea consumption. That said, the study does not specify what kind of tea participants drank, or how long the drink brewed. However, these two criteria can play on the virtues of the plant.
For scientists, this positive effect of tea on eye health could be explained by the drink’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Tea also contains neuroprotectors which have been shown to have a positive effect on reducing the risk of heart disease, cancer or diabetes.
