Moroccan doctors extracted an original foreign body from a 6-year-old girl. It was a leech of 6 centimeters installed at the level of his glottis for 2 months.
In Morocco, a 6-year-old girl was transferred to the otolaryngology department of Ibn Rochd Hospital in Casablanca. As the story goes Le Figaro, she presented to the facility because of severe breathing difficulties and discharge of blood through the mouth, called hemoptysis.
Without hesitation, this medical team performs a nasofibroscopy. This examination makes it possible to have an overview of the oral cavity, the soft palate and the larynx. And this is where the surprise of these practitioners begins. Nasofibroscopy revealed the presence of a leech.
Water from a stream
The animal measured 6 cm and was lodged in the child’s throat, at the level of the glottis. This clinical case published in the scientific journal Journal of Surgery Case Reports explains that the doctors were able to remove it using forceps. All of the girl’s symptoms were relieved after the operation and she was released the day after the operation.
The child’s parents reported that the symptoms started about two months after she drank water from a stream. And it is precisely the favorite place of residence of leeches. We imagine therefore that the worm must have been very small when it was swallowed. The leech certainly continued to develop inside the girl’s body.
