Not hungry because of the heat, but still holiday kilos
“When the mercury rises, you quickly lose some excess pounds.” You often hear that, but on the other hand we also know the holiday kilos that come on as ‘naturally’. What about exactly?
No appetite
Your energy balance depends on a number of things that determine whether you lose or gain weight. Only one of them is temperature. At about 25-30 degrees Celsius, your body ensures that your internal heat will not rise too much. The resting metabolism is therefore adjusted. Your appetite also decreases. This is because your body produces less of the hormone serotonin. You’re just less hungry.
less movement
If it gets tropically warm, so above 30 degrees Celisus, you get a feverish feeling and you don’t have any appetite at all. But if you think that you will easily lose a lot of weight at high temperatures, you will be disappointed. When it’s that hot, you often automatically adjust your movement. Because you usually don’t feel like going for a run or long bike rides. Let alone working out at the gym. So you also consume fewer calories.
Holiday kilos
That is also the problem of being on vacation. You relax, do little, lie in the sun. All in all, you consume few calories. While you often let the reins loose when it comes to food. Good food, extensive buffets and an extra beer or glass of wine. It’s the joys of the holiday that make you arrive. You actually know this too.
The best remedy for those holiday kilos is to stay active while on holiday. For example, start the day with a (beach) walk, before it gets hot. By the way, did you know that the average difference in body weight in winter and summer is no more than 5 percent? That’s not really much!
