The Brest University Hospital, where this woman gave birth in 2007, was ordered to pay precisely 950,000 euros to this former nurse anesthetist for this severe handicap. 217,000 euros must also be paid to the Primary Health Insurance Fund of Finistère for the costs advanced to the victim.
The judgment rendered by the Nantes Administrative Court of Appeal also forced the hospital to cover 75% of Dominique Appriou’s future health expenses: childcare costs for his children, costs for the employment of a home, equipment renewal costs …
In 2007, Dominique Appriou was 43 years old when she came to give birth at the maternity hospital of the University Hospital of Brest. But her delivery is complicated. Several shortcomings noted
After six weeks of coma, the outcome of the ordeal is heavy for the young mother: she is quadriplegic and blind.
After nine years of legal battle initiated by the family of Dominique Appriou against the CHU of Brest, the court of appeal considered the hospital establishment was not totally out of the question.
The judgment, taken up by Ouest-France, stipulates that “the obstetrical management of childbirth then of hemorrhagic complications was in accordance with the rules of the art and the data acquired from science”. But “several shortcomings [ont été relevés ] in the management of his resuscitation after delivery by cesarean section “.
