Eating avocado regularly could help prevent type 2 diabetes, according to a new study.
- A new study from Baylor College of Medicine shows that eating avocado helps fight type 2 diabetes.
- Research conducted with 6,224 volunteers showed that certain compounds in the fruit are associated with a reduction in fasting blood sugar and fasting insulin levels.
- For researchers, it may be good for metabolic health to include avocado in a balanced diet.
The French are the biggest consumers of avocados in Europe with around 3 kilos per person per year. This fruit, often taken for a vegetable, is attributed with numerous virtues: good for the heart, anti-cholesterol, rich in fiber and fatty acids monounsaturated. A new study of Baylor College of Medicinefor its part, highlights its role in the prevention of type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes : 120 foods scrutinized
To carry out this work presented in the scientific journal ScienceDirect in October 2023researchers identified avocado metabolomic biomarkers (organic compounds from food) and examined their associations with blood sugar levels in 6,224 volunteers.
In addition to blood tests and blood sugar levels, participants were asked about their intake of avocados and 120 other foods during their meals. Avocado lovers put it on their plate between once a week and once a day. The incidence of type 2 diabetes was assessed during a follow-up period of approximately 18 years.
Type 2 diabetes : avocado helps regulate blood sugar
Analyzes performed in this study showed a correlation between three metabolomic spectral characteristics of avocado and a significant decrease in fasting blood sugar, as well as a decrease in fasting insulin levels. Additionally, the findings suggest a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes among people who regularly consumed avocados – or at least one per day, even after adjusting for body mass index. (BMI).
The researchers write in their article that they have highlighted “highly significant associations between blood glucose and avocado-related metabolomic traits, which serve as biomarkers of the physiological impact of food intake after digestion and absorption.”
So, for them, regularly including avocado in a balanced diet can benefit metabolic health and help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.
