After taking a combination of five plant extracts, in addition to healthy-dietary measures, prediabetic and early-stage type 2 diabetic patients experienced a reduction in fasting blood sugar levels.
- As part of a clinical trial, the effectiveness of “TOTUM●63”, a combination of five plant extracts targeting the pathophysiological mechanisms of type 2 diabetes, was tested.
- In prediabetics, this plant solution reduced fasting blood sugar, that two hours after oral glucose intake, glycated hemoglobin and insulin resistance, in 3 doses per day as well as in 2 doses per day.
- At six months, the tolerance and safety profile of the supplement was found to be favorable.
While we regularly hear about type 1 and 2 diabetes, prediabetes is not as often mentioned. However, this state where blood sugar is abnormally high without reaching the diagnostic thresholds for diabetes represents a key component of metabolic syndrome, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Thus, its management is essential. The latter is based on hygienic and dietary rules, therapeutic treatments, but also natural solutions. Recently, a plant-based, non-medicinal active substance, developed by Valbiotis Healthcare, a French scientific research laboratory, appears to have proven effective in combating prediabetes and the early stages of type 2 diabetes.
Prediabetes: a placebo, 5 g of an active plant substance in 2 or 3 doses per day
“As part of an international, multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind phase II/III clinical trial, we tested the effectiveness of TOTUM●63, a combination of five plant extracts that targets the mechanisms pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes without equivalent in the prevention of prediabetes”declared Pascal Sirvent, Director of Discovery and Preclinical Research Valbiotis Healthcare, during a press conference during which the results of the study were going to be revealed.
For the purposes of this work, 636 adults cared for in 52 centers from seven countries were recruited. Of these, 79% had prediabetes and 21% had early-stage type 2 diabetes. The participants, who did not benefit from any treatment, had an increase in fasting blood sugar and abdominal obesity. During the intervention, which lasted six months, participants received health and diet advice and were divided into three groups. The first received a 5 g dose of the plant supplement in three doses per day. Members of the second group had to take it twice a day. Finally, the rest of the volunteers received a placebo three doses per day. At the end of the intervention, all patients were followed for three more months.
A significant reduction in fasting blood sugar in prediabetics
“No safety problems (hypoglycemia, gastrointestinal tolerance) were noted during the study”indicated Pascal Sirvent. According to the results, compared to the placebo, the combination of five plant extracts significantly reduced fasting blood sugar (- 8.1 mg/dl), blood sugar two hours after oral glucose intake (- 21.9 mg/dl). dl), glycated hemoglobin (-0.18%) and insulin resistance (-1.04 points) in prediabetics. After six months, the plant solution also reduced the number of cases of diabetes by 40% in the same patients. For early stage type 2 diabetics, a reduction in fasting blood sugar (- 7.13 mg/dl) and glycated hemoglobin (- 0.45%) is also observed.
Another finding: the supplement attenuated low-grade inflammation and led to statistically significant weight loss. “It is very interesting to have an active substance that is both clinically proven and widely usable in a preventive or early setting, to limit the incidence of type 2 diabetes, a chronic disease with often severe long-term and long-term complications. very strong impact on the quality of life of patients”, concluded Samy Hadjadj, professor of endocrinology, diabetology and metabolic diseases, hospital practitioner at Nantes University Hospital.
