The depressed teenagers experience psychological suffering recognizable by a few symptoms such as anxiety, sadness, apathy or self-loathing. But depression can also be accompanied by digestive disorders, while anxiety could promote skin diseases. This is the observation made by Swiss psychologists from the University of Basel and German scientists from the Ruhr University in Bochum (Germany).
Their analysis, published in Plos One, was conducted on a panel of 6,483 American adolescents aged 13 to 18. The work concludes that children and adolescents who have suffered from mental disorders are more exposed to the risk of digestive disorders or skin diseases associated with anxiety.
A new link between epilepsy and eating disorders
“Emotional disorders like depression were often followed byarthritis [maladie inflammatoire qui touche les articulations, ndlr] and diseases of the digestive system, the researchers note in the study, while a relationship existed between the anxiety disordersand skin diseases”. The management of depressionand mental disorders should therefore, according to psychologists, be associated with consideration of the risks of physical disorders.
Another interesting observation, the study also highlights an association between epilepsy and eating disorders. An unprecedented relationship according to Marion Tegethoff, author of the study: “For the first time, we have established that epilepsy can be followed by an increased risk of eating disorders, a phenomenon that had only been observed in rare case previously. This suggests that the approaches of epilepsy treatments [peuvent être envisagés également dans le contexte] eating disorders”.
In the past, it was scientifically established that a balanced diet could regulate epileptic seizures.
