A social insulator
According to this study, 4 in 5 French people do not know exactly where to find information to improve their quality of life with a prosthesis. These doubts reduce them to silence: more than 60% of hearing aid patients do not speak freely about their experience, and are inclined to hide their condition. A third of them can only confide in their spouse or their dentist, even if there again, there is still reluctance to broach the subject. Finally, 4 out of 10 wearers say they are “embarrassed” to wear a prosthesis.
Self-esteem is also affected. A third of those questioned declared that they felt “older” since wearing braces. An impression reinforced by the feeling of being socially stigmatized by part of the population.
An impact on nutritional balance
Almost two-thirds of French people who wear braces say they have adopted new lifestyle habits, especially in terms of food. Half say they don’t enjoy food like they used to, and some even avoid foods they liked like pizza, for example. More problematic, 20% of them admit to having reduced their consumption of fruits and vegetables …
The fear of social interactions at mealtime linked to a loss of pleasure would lead to a less rich diet. This change in diet exposes them to a significant risk of pathologies.
