The Dacia Spring will be renewed from 2024. The small, low-cost electric city car should trade its dated undersides for a design more in tune with the European market. The current model is derived from Renaults designed for certain emerging markets.
With its financial results for the year 2021, the Renault group presented some prospects for the future. Some obviously concern Dacia, with an unexpected announcement relating to the Spring. The small “low cost” electric city car from the Romanian manufacturer, marketed in Europe for less than a year, will be replaced in 2024.
Why replace the Spring so soon?
With the launch of the Spring on the Old Continent, Dacia has made an impression by offering the cheapest electric car on the market. A model which, at the same time, has contributed to lowering average CO emissions2 of the mark to follow the evolution of the regulations in this area. But the benefits of the Spring are far from being at the level of the competition, whether in terms of autonomy, equipment or safety, and for good reason: it is a modified version of the Chinese Renault City K-ZE, itself derived from the thermal Renault Kwid launched in India in 2015. Countries where automotive standards differ from those of Europe. In addition, the production of the Spring in China by Dongfeng is a residue of the partnership between Renault and the Chinese manufacturer which ended in 2019. Convinced of the commercial potential of the Dacia Spring thanks to this first attempt, the model having passed to 46,000 copies in 2021, the Renault group must therefore quickly review its copy to offer a new generation more relevant on this side of the world.
Details to follow
The Renault Nissan Alliance is counting on five common modular platforms to develop its 100% electric vehicles during the 2020 decade, based on the CMF-EV architecture model of the Mégane E-Tech Electric. The replacement for the Dacia Spring, whose name remains to be confirmed, will be based on the CMF-A technical base. Its place of production has not yet been revealed. As indicated above, it should be marketed in 2024. For more technical information or images, we will have to wait a little longer. According to Luca de Meo, managing director of Renault, the decision to give this future to the Spring was taken in recent months.
