Drones are used for criminal activities and there is little we can do about it. Read here how they are used.
Drones are of course very cool. For example, for filming when you take a car ride. But this fairly new technology is also being used for bad intentions. For example, to smuggle all kinds of illegal products into prison. The government has known this for a long time, but can hardly counter it.
Criminal Drones
All prisons in our country are affected by these drones. All locations are ‘affected to a greater or lesser extent’ by smuggling attempts with drones. It is a big problem because it allows criminals to continue their activities. Think of a telephone with which contact can be made with the outside world. Weapons are also smuggled in. This also jeopardizes the safety of the staff.
The government recognizes this and has taken measures. However, Jim Nijdam, chairman of the prison staff, emphasizes that the problem of drone smuggling is not diminishing. But actually increasing.
Solutions
The Ministry of Justice and Security has been investigating since 2019. Solutions must also emerge from this research. “If there are effective options among these, it can be used to decide which techniques are suitable for wider application, in which establishments and at what cost,” says a spokesperson. However, those solutions still do not exist. No reason has been given why not.
That is why some prisons take measures themselves. The PI Alphen aan den Rijn has made a construction above the courtyard. As a result, drones should no longer be able to land or drop items. Yet criminals remain accustomed to these measures to attempt†
