It can always be crazier! So also with this crypto mining factory that is in a – let’s say – weird place.
Russia. At the moment we read a lot about the country and the war they started in Ukraine. However, other news is also coming out, because the Russian authorities are investigating a crypto mining farm. This factory was found in the oldest prison in the country.
Crypto mining factory in prison
That is not the intention and that is why research is currently being done in the prison called ‘Buturkaya’. This reported the Russian newspaper Kommersant. Built in 1771 in Moscow, the prison housed a mining farm that consumes nearly 8,400 kilowatts of electricity. The deputy director appears to be involved in the scam. This is especially true for illegally tapping electricity. This cost the government about 62,000 rubles. Doesn’t seem like much, but it is in Russia.
Mining digital coins is legal in the country these days. The use of cryptos is now also allowed. On the other hand, tapping electricity and the improper use of government facilities is illegal.
Psychiatric Department
Authorities found the mining equipment in the prison’s psychiatric ward. What exactly it was for hardware, however, is unknown. That is why we do not know which crypto was mined. That could well be Bitcoin, by the way. The mining farm would have been active from November 2021 to February 2022.
Incidentally, these types of crooks have been quite creative before. For example, the head of a post office in Russia has been arrested for similar practices. In Poland, there was even a mining farm in the police headquarters.
