Cybercrime is booming in our country. It has decreased slightly in the past three months, but is still much higher than before the Covid-19 pandemic.
During the lockdowns and curfews, criminals have also increasingly started working from home. This is evident from the statistics VPNGuide keeps track of cybercrime in our country. During our confinement in 2020 and 2021, there was even an increase of no less than 200 percent compared to 2019. In the past quarter, cybercrime seems to be declining slightly, but it may not yet have a name. It seems that the crooks have also embraced hybrid working. Instead of playing the facade tourist, breaking in from behind the computer is apparently very rewarding.
Zeeland leads the way
Where things are declining nationally, the Zeelanders are still happily making progress. In the past quarter, the number of cybercrime cases in this province increased by more than 53 percent compared to last year. Working from home still seems very popular for criminals in Groningen, Utrecht and Flevoland.
At the municipal level, there are about two cases per 10,000 inhabitants. We see outliers in Brabant, with the municipality of Hilvarenbeek as the absolute national frontrunner, mainly known for the Beekse Bergen, with 7.7 reports per 10,000 inhabitants.
Disclaimer is that the researchers can only include registered cybercrime incidents in the investigation. If the crime is not reported because you are ashamed of yourself because you clicked on a phishing link, it will not count in the statistics.
