March 27, 1998 – The Office of Alternative Medicine (OAM) at the National Institutes of Health (US) announced the creation of the first US government-funded Chiropractic Research Center. The news was made public on March 3.
The grant was awarded to the Consortial Center for Chiropractic Research, a group of chiropractic schools and organizations headed by the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Unlike other research centers established by the OAM, which focused on a specific health problem, the $ 2.7 million grant over five years will be aimed at scientifically documenting the effects of chiropractic.
Dr. Wayne B. Jonas, Director of OAM, said that “CCCR will establish an infrastructure to facilitate high quality research while increasing opportunities for chiropractic research.” Thereafter, the CCCR will study the effectiveness of chiropractic treatments and will provide its assistance to researchers wishing to develop research projects.
Research projects will be primarily oriented towards chiropractic treatment of musculoskeletal problems, including acute and chronic pain.
