At the end of the Council of Ministers this Wednesday, June 16, the Prime Minister John Castex made two announcements:
– the curfew will end on June 20
– the mask will no longer be compulsory outside from Thursday, June 17, “except in certain circumstances”.
Jean Castex, who specified that the government relies on an opinion from the High Council of Public Health on the lifting of the wearing of the mask, detailed the places where the mask will remain compulsory :
- Outside : “the places of gatherings, crowded places, queues, markets, a stadium stand…”.
- It remains obligatory in closed places : “at work, in shops, in transport and in all places of gathering”
A decision is justified by the health situation which is improving day by day and “faster than we had hoped”explained the Prime Minister, before declaring: “We are living an important moment, a happy moment of returning to a normal form of life.”
Yesterday, however, the Minister of Health had called for the “collective vigilance”against the Delta (Indian) variant.
He had also mentioned a few weeks ago, “differentiated rules”. Understand: depending on where you are. In practice, the idea is to lift the obligation to wear a mask in open and airy places, where few people are concentrated.
Conversely, wearing a mask remains compulsory in the outdoor places where people congregate. “When you are outside, in the center of a big city, with lots of shops, you will queue outside, you will eat, you will meet people etc. There, as long as we do not have an adequate level of vaccination coverage, it seems more prudent to maintain the obligation to wear a mask ”, had further explained Olivier Véran.
When do you become infected withoutside ?
Less than 10% of infections occur in the open airaccording to a study published in February in the Journal of infectiousdiseases. We then speak of contamination by aerosolsthat is to say by droplets and particles emitted when speaking or breathing, and which can persist in the air for a few minutes to several hours.
Iare airborne contamination are mostly done in confined spaces poorly ventilated orof which the ventilation East inadequate And when a person is physically close (less than 2 meters) with a person with Covid-19. Hence the importance of the mask in a closed place.
Outside, it’s a matter of common sense. To become contaminated in this way, detail in the Sunday newspaper, epidemiologist Antoine Flahault, an infected person (without a mask) would have to sputter while talking, coughing or sneezing directly into the eyes, nostrils or mouth of the person in front (without a mask or glasses). “A rare case!”, According to this specialist.
