We know: the Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus is transmitted mainly by air and especially via the droplets that patients can project when talking, coughing, sneezing … Hence the need for a protective mask against the coronavirus , which considerably limits its spread in the population.
But among the professions where wearing a mask is impossible, there is music. And precisely: a recent study from the University of Erlangen (in Germany) tried to determine which musical instruments were most at risk for the transmission of the Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus.
The trumpet and the clarinet less risky than the transverse flute
The researchers therefore proposed an experiment to the musicians of theBavarian Public Radio Symphony Orchestra : they inhaled a substance similar to that found in electronic cigarettes (without the nicotine, of course!) then played theOde to Joy of Beethoven in front of recording and analysis devices.
Results ? By observing the projection of postilions, the researchers found that the trumpet and clarinet players produced a cloud of droplets that could extend up to five feet forward. In contrast, transverse flute players could project droplets of saliva up to 2 meters in front of them.
The researchers’ recommendations? Leave space between the musicians: 2 meters between each wind instrument (trumpet, clarinet …) and even 3 meters around the flautists!
Good news: in his speech of November 24, 2020, the President of the Republic announced the reopening of concert halls from December 15, 2020. The health protocol has not yet been unveiled.
