Cystic fibrosis is one of the comorbidities associated with a risk of severe form of Covid-19. Until then, only patients with this disease aged between 50 and 69 could be vaccinated. Today, these recommendations are evolving.
Vaccination opens to people under 50
The eligibility criteria have been changed somewhat. Indeed, theAssociation Conquer Cystic Fibrosis and theGregory Lemarchal Association had challenged the Ministry of Health. They demanded the opening of vaccination to younger people suffering from this pathology. In a press release, one of the Associations informs us that Olivier Véran responded favorably to this request: “ patients with cystic fibrosis aged less than 50 years and over can now be vaccinated. “It is therefore detailed that volunteers with the disease will be able to benefit from the Comirnaty vaccine, developed by Pfizer BioNtech, from the age of 16 and from” Moderna vaccine », Designed by the Moderna laboratory, from the age of 18. Remember that the AstraZeneca serum is, for the moment, recommended for people over 55 years old. Volunteers must be provided with a prescription, obtained by their CRCM (Cystic Fibrosis Resource and Competence Center).
This is therefore excellent news for people with cystic fibrosis, as the Association quotes, citing: ” a relief for our community. “
What about those under 16?
Regarding children with cystic fibrosis under the age of 16, there is ” certain exceptional situations “. These may ” lead to prescriptions without marketing authorization », In case of lung transplants for example. Making vaccination against Covid-19 possible for transplant patients was another fight led by the Association.
As a reminder, cystic fibrosis is a rare and genetic disease mainly affecting the respiratory tract and the digestive system. It is characterized by an abnormal consistency of the mucus, making it viscous and sticky. It can then accumulate, obstruct and infect the bronchi. According to the National Institute of Science and Medical Research (Inserm), 200 affected children are born each year in France.
