The World Health Organization considers the epidemic situation on the continent worrying and calls on European leaders to speed up the vaccination campaign.
This Thursday, April 1, the World Health Organization shows concern about the epidemic situation that it considers “the most worrying” for “months”. Faced with the challenges of this third wave, Europe has a role to play with vaccination. However, the Organization regrets that only 10% of the European population has received a dose of vaccine and 4% a complete series. Faced with the slowness of the vaccination campaign, the WHO criticizes the management of vaccines during this coronavirus pandemic.
“Vaccines are our best way out of this pandemic”
“The slow pace of vaccination prolongs the pandemic”, deplores the European branch of the UN organization through a press release, stressing that the number of new cases in Europe has risen sharply over the past five weeks. “Vaccines are our best way out of the pandemic. Not only do they work, but they are also very effective in limiting infections. Nevertheless, the deployment of these vaccines is unacceptably slow “, lamented the director of WHO Europe, Hans Kluge, quoted in the press release. For the director, the trend must be reversed. “Let me be clear: we need to speed up the process by scaling up production, reducing barriers to vaccine delivery, and using the smallest dose we have in stock”, he stressed.
Soon the million deaths
The situation has accelerated in recent weeks and the fallout is not good. According to the WHO, the number of deaths is “rapidly” approaching one million in the Europe zone, which includes some fifty countries as well as Russia and other states in Central Asia. The number of new weekly cases stands at 1.6 million, after falling below one million just five weeks ago, says the WHO.
