While the epidemic is on the rise again, the DREES once again demonstrates the interest of vaccination against serious forms.
- After several weeks of calm, the circulation of the coronavirus is on the rise in the country.
- Since the start of the anti-coronavirus vaccination campaign, in France, 50,006,445 people now have a complete vaccination schedule (i.e. 74.2% of the total population).
According to a new study by DREESwhich has refined its statistical tools, six out of ten patients admitted to critical care because of Covid-19 are not vaccinated.
Hospital admissions
Among people aged 20 or over who entered hospital between October 11 and 17 for whom a positive RT-PCR test could be identified in the SI-DEP database, 61% of critical care admissions and 56% in conventional hospitalization come from unvaccinated patients, while fully vaccinated people represent respectively 35% and 40%. “For deaths, these ratios rise to 56% for unvaccinated people and 36% for those fully vaccinated,” say the experts. In the general population, the share of unvaccinated individuals aged 20 or over is 12% and that of fully vaccinated people is 84%.
In addition, the DREEs has identified nearly six times more positive RT-PCR tests among unvaccinated people. Between September 20 and October 17, 2021, the number of positive RT-PCR tests for 100,000 unvaccinated French people aged 20 or over is 535, compared to around 96 for 100,000 fully vaccinated people, i.e. almost 6 times more for the former. Over the past four weeks, the number of positive RT-PCR tests per 100,000 inhabitants aged 20 or over has increased for all vaccination statuses. “For unvaccinated subjects, between October 11 and 17, this number stands at 122 per 100,000 population, compared to 118 from October 4 to 10 (the lowest level of the fourth wave)”, add the scientists. It also increases for people with a complete vaccination schedule: 25 per 100,000 inhabitants between October 11 and 17, compared to 22 the previous week.
Revision
“This weekly follow-up has been revised in order to refine the statistics produced by improving their construction methodology”, specifies the Drees. Health authorities had suspended the publication of data on the proportions of vaccinated and unvaccinated Covid-19 patients for three weeks. At the end of September, the Ministry of Health had estimated that eight out of ten people hospitalized because of Covid were not vaccinated.
