WHO has announced eight other confirmed cases of infection with the novel coronavirus in Saudi Arabia. For its part, Qatar reports two new contaminations.
We thought he had disappeared but he is still there! The new coronavirus (MERS-CoV) has indeed just infected eight new people in Saudi Arabia. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are among the victims three women and three men, including two dead, from Riyadh, the capital of the Wahhabi kingdom, and from the south of the country. The deceased suffered from chronic illnesses and several patients are in intensive care.
More worryingly, the virus has once again spread outside of Saudi Arabia as Qatar’s Higher Health Council (CHC) this week announced two new cases of MERS-CoV infection. According to information from the Middle East emirate, a 59-year-old man and a 29-year-old young woman are currently hospitalized in intensive care, the latter is even in critical condition. These new victims bring the total number of cases in the country to 4.
Since the onset of MERS-CoV in September 2012, the total number of confirmed cases of infection has risen to 104, including 49 deaths. Among them, the vast majority have been reported in Saudi Arabia. WHO still encourages all Member States to continue their surveillance and promptly report any new cases.
