If the pill remains the most used contraceptive, there is a real disaffection with this method of contraception over the years, according to the first data from the Health Barometer 2016 on women’s contraceptive practices and their changes since 2010, produced by Public Health France on the occasion of World Contraception Day on September 26, 2017.
The essential points of the barometer
The barometer reveals that in 2016, the pill remains the most widely used method of contraception, ahead of the intrauterine device and the condom, even if women aged 20-29 are using this method of contraception less and less in favor of intrauterine device, condom and the implant.
In 2010, 45% of women used the pill as a means of contraception, they were only 40.5% in 2013, and 36.5% in 2016, reveals the barometer.
The pill is used more among 15-19 year olds (60.4%) and 20-24 year olds (59.5%), then its use decreases thereafter to concern less than half (47.8%) of 25-29 years old and more than a third (35.4%) of 30-34 year olds.
“Even if the pill remains the most widely used method of contraception, it has experienced a disaffection which has persisted since 2012 following the debate on the risks associated with third and fourth generation pills”, recalls this barometer.
The reduction in its use benefits other means of contraception, in particular the IUD or intrauterine device (IUD, +6.9 points compared to 2010), condom(+4.7 points) and the implant(+1.9 points).
