Invented by a Malaysian doctor, this new method of contraception is suitable for penises and vaginas.
- Today, there are two types of condoms: external or internal.
- They offer protection against sexually transmitted diseases and infections, but also against unwanted pregnancies.
The first latex condom is over 200 years old. Two centuries later, a new invention could revolutionize its use. A Malaysian gynecologist has developed a new type of condom, called Wondaleaf, allowing it to be fixed on a vagina as on a penis. According to John Tang Ing Chinh, its inventor, this is a world first.
One condom, two uses
This new condom is designed in the same material as some dressings: it is polyurethane, a compound that is thin, flexible but also strong and waterproof. “Once you put it on, you usually forget it’s there”explains its inventor in an interview with Reuters.
It is equipped with an adhesive which allows it to be fixed around the vagina and which offers additional protection by limiting contact between the skins. The adhesive is present on only one side of the condom, which makes it reversible and usable by people of both sexes.

A “non-discriminatory” method of contraception
In a promotional video posted on the Wondaleaf Instagram account, the company believes that this new condom model is non-discriminatory. “With this unisex condom, everyone is able to take charge of their own sexual health, regardless of gender or sexual orientation“, believes John Tang Ing Chinh. The gynecologist is convinced of the interest of this new method. “Based on the number of clinical trials we have conducted, I am quite optimistic that over time it will be a significant addition to the many contraceptive methods used in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.“, he added. The Wondaleaf condom will be sold in pairs and will cost just over three euros. According to the company, it could be marketed on its site as early as December.
