The Lactalis group had already recalled 12 references of infant milk, today 600 lots are withdrawn from sale. The government announced this massive withdrawal Sunday, December 10, due to a risk of contamination by salmonella. The Ministry of Economy and Finance has published the list of products concerned in a press release.
The Lactalis group markets infant formula under the Milumel, Picot and Carrefour brands. On December 2, he recalled 12 batches made in his factory in Craon (Mayenne). This measure followed 20 cases of salmonella contamination of babies under six months of age who had consumed these products.
Initial measures insufficient according to Bercy
This week, five new cases were reported. One of the infants had consumed rice milk which was not on the previous list. Today, the children are doing well according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The latter explains in his press release that the measures taken on December 2 were not “likely to control the risk of contamination” and thus extended the recalls.
The spokesperson for the Lactalis group referred to “a probable cause of contamination which occurred on one of our drying towers during the period from May 1 to May 6”. The group stopped its installations this weekend in order to “initiate cleaning measures, additional disinfection, reinforced for the future”.
Bercy asks parents, as far as possible, to no longer use products, whether they are new or used. As a reminder, the French Pediatric Society has formulated substitution recommendations. In the event of symptoms of infection (diarrhea, vomiting or fever), parents are advised to consult a doctor.
The Directorate General of Health has opened a free information number 0800 636 636 (open 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.), in addition to the one set up by Lactalis, 0800 120 120 which will be accessible until 11 p.m. on Sunday. December 10, then from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday 11.
