February 6, 1998 – The link between an individual’s food choices and cancer prevention is confirmed in a report that examined the results of 4,500 scientific studies. The study Food, Nutrition and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective required three years of research and was produced by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund. The 650-page report contains diet recommendations and guidelines that, according to the 15 members of the expert panel that oversaw the study, would prevent 60% to 70% of cancer cases worldwide. .
The seven main recommendations of the report are:
1. Eat a diet rich in foods prepared with plants;
2. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables;
3. Maintain a normal weight and be physically active;
4. Consume alcohol in moderation, or simply do without it;
5. Choose foods low in fat and salt;
6. Prepare and preserve food respecting the rules of hygiene and conservation;
7. Do not smoke or consume tobacco products.
