Lovers of Coffee, rejoice! Scientists have found a new health benefit in this drink. Indeed, drinking one coffee a day would prevent age-related eye diseases according to the results of a scientific study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
Researchers studied the impact of chlorogenic acid or ACG, a powerful antioxidant in Coffeeon vision. They found that it prevented eye degeneration in mice.
To carry out their experiment, they treated rodents with nitric oxide which creates oxidative stress and free radicals and leads to retinal degeneration.
Coffee helps fight against ocular degeneration
“The retina is a thin layer of tissue inside the eye that contains millions of light-sensitive cells and other nerve cells that receive and organize visual information. Collectively, these cells send visual information to the brain through the optic nerve. The retina is one of the most metabolically active tissues in the body. She needs a lot of oxygen and quickly so as not to be damaged. Therefore, it is susceptible to a variety of diseases caused by oxidative stress, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, all of which can lead to partial or total blindness, ”recalls researcher Holim Jang from the Department of Food Sciences at Cornell University in the United States and co-author of the study.
Mice that had been pretreated with ACG, the antioxidant in coffee, did not develop any signs of retinal damage.
While the results of this survey are encouraging, the researchers point out that they do not indicate whether to drink coffee directly brings ACG into the retina. “We need to do larger clinical studies to establish the links between coffee and retinal health,” concludes Holim Jang.
