Children who regularly consume omega-3s and omega-6s read better than others, according to a new study from the University of Gothenburg (Sweden). To arrive at this conclusion, the researchers worked with 154 children aged 9 to 10, educated in Sweden.
For 3 months, they regularly took a computer reading test to assess their reading speed, their ability to decipher unfamiliar words and the extent of their vocabulary. Half of the children also received food supplements based on omega-3 and omega-6, while the others were entitled to placebos.
Smoother and faster reading
Results ? At the end of the experiment, the children who had consumed more omega-3 and omega-6 had higher results than the others: in particular, they had less trouble deciphering unfamiliar words and read more quickly.
“Our modern diet is quite poor in omega-3 and omega-6, explains Mats Johnson, main author of this work, published in the scientific journal Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. However, we know that these fatty acids play an important role in nerve transmission: they could benefit children in a situation ofschool failure. “
To fill up on omega-3 and omega-6, bet on the Mediterranean diet: fish, olive oil, oilseeds … It is ideal! Otherwise, ask your doctor (or pediatrician) for advice, who can prescribe food supplements.
