This is a study that should kick in the most traditionalist stretchers. Homosexual couples would bring as much well-being to children as heterosexual couples. An Australian study from the University of Melbourne is adding fuel to the debate on same-sex education. She argues that same-sex families get along well and have a positive impact on children’s health. An asset that places their health and well-being above the average for the general population.
Dr Simon Crouch, researcher at the Jack Brockhoff Child Health and Wellbeing Program at the University of Melbourne conducted his study by interviewing 315 parents homosexuals and their 500 children. 80% of the offspring were from female parents and 18% from male partners.
“We know that same-sex couples are more likely to share upbringing and work responsibilities more equitably than families with straight parents,” said Dr. Crouch, quoted by NBC news. This is due, according to him, to the fact that homosexual parents distribute the roles not according to gender stereotypes but according to the real skills of each one. “This contributes to a more harmonious and healthier home for children,” he adds.
Still stigmatized
Thus, children of homosexual parents obtained scores 6% higher than the general population in terms of health and family cohesion. When it comes to temperament, self-esteem, behavior and mental health, no difference was found between children of same-sex parents and those without.
On the downside, however, the study suggested a certain form of stigmatization of children of homosexual parents. Discrimination that may affect their mental health and emotional well-being in the future.
