Mosquito control operations (elimination of breeding sites and adult mosquitoes) are underway in the town of Taradeau, in the Var. An outbreak of two indigenous cases of chikungunya was indeed identified there on September 15. Last August, other indigenous cases were identified in a nearby town.
An “indigenous” case means that the person has fallen ill “on national territory and has not traveled to a contaminated area in the 15 days preceding the onset of symptoms”. This explains why health authorities as well as health professionals are strongly mobilized to prevent the spread of the virus.
How to eradicate mosquito outbreaks
A door-to-door information campaign has been launched so that residents of this area can mobilize to eradicate the outbreaks conducive to the multiplication of mosquitoes. A brochure reminds them to:
- empty plant cups and anything that holds small amounts of water, such as garden furniture
- collect green waste that can shelter mosquito eggs
- clear tall grass, resting places for mosquitoes
- remove the leaves and all plants blocking the gutters.
