Proteins from chicken and salmon help prevent heart disease, according to the results of a study published in the medical journal the journal Neurology. Consuming it daily would reduce the risk of stroke by 20%.
Researchers at Nanjing University School of Medicine analyzed the results of seven diet studies involving 254,489 people who had been medically followed for 14 years.
They found that individuals who ate 20 grams of fish or chicken breast each day were 20% less likely to experience a Stroke than those who ate little or no. And, for every additional 20g of protein consumed, the risk would be further reduced by 26%.
The results of this study reveal that animal protein appears to be more protective than plant protein. Indeed, “animal protein lowers blood pressure, and fatty acids, omega-3s in fish protect against stroke,” explains Dr. Liu Xinfeng, co-author of the study.
“It is estimated that 1.4 million deaths from Strokecould be avoided each year in the world by a greater consumption of animal or fish proteins apart from those of red meat and processed meats ”.
But watch out for the red meat
On the other hand, red meat and processed meats (sausage, bacon, etc.) do not provide these beneficial effects for health. US researchers at Harvard Medical School found that consuming a serving of red meat daily has many health risks: the habit increases the risk of death by 13%, the risk of cardiovascular disease by 18%, and the risk of death. by 10% cancer.
Researchers at Harvard University, in a study published in June 2014, suspect the proteins in red meat to accelerate cell division and tumor growth. In addition, red meats are often high in chemicals such as nitrates, substances already classified as probable carcinogens.
“While further research is needed to establish definitive recommendations for chicken or salmon consumption, the results of this study are convincing and should mobilize us for a change in diet,” concludes Dr Liu Xinfeng.
