Soon Christmas Eve and its traditional excesses! Between the aperitif, the glass of wine to accompany the capon, the flute of champagne that makes the log slide and the digestive after the coffee, our alcohol consumption will certainly skyrocket…
Are you a migraine sufferer? Please note: according to a new study conducted by the Leiden University Medical Center (in the Netherlands) and published in the specialist journal European Journal of Neurologyalcoholic beverages would promote migraines in sensitive people.
To reach this conclusion, the scientists worked with a group of 2,197 individuals periodically suffering from migraines: they answered a questionnaire concerning their alcohol consumption during the last 3 months.
Avoid: red wine!
Verdict? 35.6% of participants said that alcohol increases the risk of having an attack: in a third of them, alcohol consumption even led to a migraine within just 3 hours. For 77.8% of participants, wine (and red wine, in particular) is “the” drink to avoid to limit migraines. Then come white wine, champagne, beer, whiskey, rum and finally vodka, mentioned by 8.5% of the volunteers.
To reduce the risks, 11.9% of the volunteers had chosen not to consume alcohol at all. The researchers also found that the impact of alcohol was greater in people with a low body mass index (BMI), ie less than 18.5.
As a reminder, approximately 15% of the world’s population is affected by migraine, a neurological disease characterized by repeated attacks manifesting mainly as painful headaches (headaches). Women are more affected than men.
