The burnout syndrome, more commonly called burn-out, affects more and more employees. This is why the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS) has decided to better train doctors to support patients.
The burnout syndrome is the subject of a HAS memo sheet
Last year, the Academy of Medicine stressed that the issue of burnout syndrome should not be managed solely by the Ministry of Labor. In reaction, the former Minister of Health, Marisol Tourraine, had seized the HAS. On May 22, 2017, the HAS therefore published a memo sheet containing recommendations relating to burnout.
Burnout is physical, mental and emotional exhaustion caused by prolonged investment in a difficult work situation. In question, the very nature of the work making it possible to qualify a hardship of the job or arduous working conditions. Thereby, caregivers are the workers most easily affected by burnout.
Burnout Syndrome is not recognized as a mental illness
While burnout is not yet officially recognized as a mental illness, it causes similar symptoms. The worker suffering from a burnout lacks energy, develops concentration problems and is easily irritable. For the HAS, it is essential to support the return to work of victims of burnout. Appointments with the occupational physician are possible on the initiative of the patient.
Among the causes of the multiplication of the burnout syndrome, the report of the fact-finding mission, presented by the Social Affairs Committee to the National Assembly, denounced the worrying deterioration of working conditions: “The process of reducing production costs is becoming an endless race, and competitiveness the watchword of all economic policies, at the expense of the constituent elements of work. “ A reproach could therefore be brought to the AS memo sheet: it focuses on external causes (medical care) burn-out, without really addressing the internal causes, in order to prevent its onset.
