the Public Health France site publishes weekly bronchiolitis figures for the end of December. Results ? It continues to spread in France. Everywhere, even in Saint-Barthélemy which is in the pre-epidemic phase. The only territory not affected: Corsica.
Bronchiolitis is a disease of the small bronchi (the one that allows air to go to the bottom of the lungs). It develops as a result of a very contagious virus called respiratory syncitial virus. It is transmitted by saliva, sneezing, coughing or even by the hands (for example on an object touched by a person infected by the virus). It mainly affects children under two years old.
Decrease in emergency consultations for bronchiolitis
Bronchiolitis begins with a common cold and escalates into breathing problems. Several reasons lead babies with bronchiolitis to the emergency room: when they are less than 6 weeks old, for babies born prematurely, when the baby drinks less than half of his bottles for at least 3 meals in a row, when he sleeps in constantly or vomits a lot.
Santé Publique France reveals that emergency consultations have fallen by 4% in its last weekly bulletin. Of 5,383 emergency consultations for bronchiolitis, 1944 (or 36%) led to hospitalizations.
