In August, two 7-year-old boys had fun pricking themselves with used needles. They received emergency triple therapy.
For the past two weeks, two families from Côtes-d’Armor have been living in anguish. On Tuesday, August 18, in the rest area of La Chapelle in Etables-sur-Mer, two 7-year-old boys found syringes with needles abandoned in the bushes and had fun pricking their arms with them.
Unaware of the danger, the two friends have said nothing about their discovery and their little game, reports the daily West France. It is only in the evening, after an afternoon at the beach, that children will admit to parents that they have played with soiled syringes.
Triple therapy started the next day
The parents therefore immediately took the two boys to the emergency room of the Yves-Le Foll hospital in Saint-Brieuc to perform blood tests. Very early the next morning, the hospital summoned them to start an emergency triple therapy called post-exposure treatment.
Initially prescribed for 5 days, the treatment of the two children was extended for a period of 28 days. “There are a lot of unknowns and uncertainties,” explains Dr. Claude Beuscart, the internist who took care of the young patients. The children wanted to play doctors and had fun pushing the syringe plunger. However, I do not know if they contained blood, if they were infected and if they had been used by several people. “
A poorly attended place
Although the doctor specifies that he followed the protocol and that the risk of infection is considered intermediate, he expresses some concerns, because the Chapel area is known to be a poorly frequented place. “A blood test will be carried out in mid-October to check that no infection has developed”, adds this specialist.
According to a close relative, contacted by West France, the children suffer from diarrhea, surely caused by the treatment. Our colleagues also indicate that the family intends to file a complaint against X for endangering the life of others with the Public Prosecutor of Saint-Brieuc.
