For nine months, a Thai woman has seen her breasts grow day by day, causing her serious pain in her back, neck and shoulders. A rare case of gigantomastia.
For nine months, Lam Phrai Si Nuan’s life has become hell. At 46, this Thai woman has to deal with an illness that is as mysterious as it is debilitating: her chest continues to grow, reaching several kilos today. The weight of her breasts is such that she has to move around on crutches, tying a piece of cloth around her neck to help support her chest. This is not without consequences: she is indeed subject to severe pain in the back, neck and shoulders.
According to the DailyMailwhich resumes a local source, Lam Phrai Si Nuan’s problem began three years ago when she noticed that her breasts had grown in size. But it’s been in the last nine months that her chest has grown abnormally. First the left breast in the last four or five months, then the right.
A rare case of gigantomastia
Followed at Phutthachinarat hospital in Phitsanulok province, Lam Phrai Si Nuan still does not know what illness she is suffering from, even though the doctors who examined her ruled out cancerous tumours.
It is very likely that she suffers from gigantomastia, a rare but benign disease that causes excessive growth of the mammary glands. Its incidence is around one case in 100,000 births. The majority of cases occur during the first trimester of pregnancy. In the absence of treatment, the increase lasts until delivery. A regression, often incomplete, takes place postpartum. It is then possible to be offered breast reduction surgery. Gigantomastia is probably due to an imbalance of female hormones such as prolactin, estrogen and progesterone.
Consideration of breast reduction
In the case of Lam Phrai Si Nuan, a breast reduction could be considered. But the woman, who is due to undergo a thorough medical examination on July 19, fears that she cannot bear such a financial burden because she and her husband are unemployed. A call for donations has been launched.
