Hope for women with breast cancer. A new machine is able to heal small tumors in less than a minute. Explanations.
Breast cancer: a machine that heals tumors in less than a minute
Today, breast cancer is responsible for a dozen thousand deaths each year. It is the most common cancer in women which occurs, in 75% of cases, after 50 years. It is also estimated that one in eight women has been, is, or will be affected by breast cancer.
Although radiotherapy is effective, it remains heavy and trying for the patients. Six weeks of treatment are indeed necessary to treat tumors located in the breast.. A period that could be reduced to just 1 minute, thanks to a new machine.
Treatment for women aged 70 and over with a small tumor
Developed by Jean-Pierre Gérard, radiotherapist at the Antoine Lacassagne center located in Nice, Papillon + is an irradiation machine which can treat tumors located in the breast in 40 seconds. This saves time for caregivers and especially for patients who receive treatment in the morning and leave the hospital the same evening. This great scientific breakthrough gives hope to those who have breast cancer but which is not intended for all women.
To be treated with the Papillon + machine, the tumor must be less than 2 cm and the patient must be 70 years of age or older. Breast tissue does not have the same density as younger women. Goal to achieve : ” achieve less than 4% relapses and 0% toxicity for the 20% of patients over 70 with a fairly small tumor »Affirms Professor Gérard.
