Breakfast would be a useful meal. It would not make you fat and would promote physical activity, according to the results of a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition . It could therefore be a way to fight against a sedentary lifestyle.
Researchers from the English University of Bath carried out a study with 23 participants aged between 21 and 60 years old. The first group was to have breakfast and the other to start their day on an empty stomach. For 6 weeks, a 700-calorie meal was provided with an “obligation” to consume half of it within two hours of waking up. During the study, the researchers found that participants who did not eat breakfast ate as many calories than others by eating more during the day. They also noticed that this meal would make it possible to be more active and to practice physical activity more easily. An interesting discovery because sedentary lifestyle is today a public health problem. It is the 4th risk factor for mortality in the world afterarterial hypertension, the smoking and the diabetes. To counteract it, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends taking 10,000 steps a day.
“It’s important to keep in mind that every body responds to breakfast differently, and not all breakfasts are created equal. The effects of sugary cereals are likely to be very different from a high-protein breakfast, “recalls Dr. Enhad Chowdhury, author of the study.
A balanced breakfast
This meal is supposed to represent 20% of the calorie intake of the day, therefore weighing about 400 calories. To start the day with a balanced meal, avoid industrial cereals that are too fatty and sugary. On the other hand, why not taste a muesli House, or a product whole grain richer in fiber, a dairy product, a fresh fruit and a hot unsweetened beverage.
