25% of French people have trouble falling asleep at least four to five times a week according to a Ipsos poll. But Internet users may have found the solution. Over the past few weeks, several videos posted on the TikTok social network acclaim a new method to fall asleep better: brain tapping – cerebral tapping in French – or “Emotional Freedom Technique(EFT) for Emotional Freedom Technique.
A way to fall asleep better
EFT is a psycho-energetic method used by psychologists. The principle is simple and therefore accessible to all: patting face and body before sleeping by repeating key phrases like “even if I feel anxious, I relax and focus on this moment” Or “I free myself from my tensions and fall asleep”.
“I use it very regularly to help people suffering from chronic insomnia.explains Camille Junot, psychologist for the National Institute of Sleep and Vigilance (INSV)has Madame Figaro. Many scientific studies prove that the gesture acts on the amygdala, the part of the brain which evaluates the events to which we are exposed to activate or not the physiological mechanisms of stress. (…) Gently tapping these points can send him a reassuring signal, which prevents the appearance of symptoms of stress and promotes sleep.“
Identify the causes of poor sleep to treat them
According to one study published in 2019, EFT can reduce anxiety but also fight against depression, phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Nevertheless, some patients are more receptive than others. As Camille Junot reminds us, “it is important to identify the emotional cause of insomnia in order to be able to remedy it.”
According to’Health Insurance, to promote sleep, it is advisable to limit noise and light in the bedroom, to ventilate it and not to heat it above 18°C-19°C. If the problem persists, you should talk about it with your general practitioner who will find the right method to help you.
