Wearing blue-light blocking glasses that protect against screen exposure just before sleeping improves sleep quality…and productivity at work the next day.
- Wearing blue light filtering glasses creates a form of physiological darkness, improving the quantity and quality of sleep.
- This benefits more night shifts than morning shifts.
The time spent in front of screens since the pandemic has continued to increase and this should not decrease in the areas affected by the curfew introduced from Saturday and for the next six weeks. No problem, by wearing your glasses against blue light you can stay in front of the screens without affecting your sleep. Better, a study conducted by American researchers reveals that these glasses improve the quality of sleep and even go so far as to boost productivity at work the next day. These findings were published in the Journal of Applied Psychology.
This benefits more night shifts than morning shifts.
The benefits of blue light blocking glasses are many. “We found that wearing blue light-filtering glasses is an effective intervention for improving sleep, work engagement, task performance, and organizational citizenship behavior, and reducing counterproductive work behaviorsobserved Cristiano L. Guarana, who participated in the study. Wearing blue light filtering glasses creates a form of physiological darkness, improving the quantity and quality of sleep.”
Blue lights are emitted by the screens we watch, whether computer, smartphone or tablet, and several studies have shown that they disrupt our sleep cycle. This new research expands understanding of the circadian rhythm, a natural internal process that regulates the sleep-wake cycle and repeats approximately every 24 hours. “In general, the effects of wearing blue light filtering glasses are stronger for those who are more nocturnal than for those who are more morning”, described Cristiano L. Guarana. The latter believes that this is due to a “greater misalignment between their internal clock and externally controlled work time” among the most nocturnal.
Improve employee productivity
Research has found that daily engagement and task performance may be linked to more underlying biological processes such as the circadian process. “Our research pushes the chronotype literature to consider the relationship between the timing of circadian processes and employee performance.the researchers wrote. This Study Provides Evidence of a Highly Cost-Effective Way to Improve Employee Sleep and Work Outcomes.”
One of the researchers, Christopher Barnes, collected data from 63 business leaders and 67 call center representatives in offices based in Brazil for an American multinational financial company and measured the performance of customer tasks. Participants were randomly selected to test glasses that filter blue light while others used a placebo.
