After eating in the canteen, 225 children, aged between 4 and 12, fell ill, AFP revealed quoted by Le Figaro. While they all come from around thirty different schools located in the vicinity of Courtrai and Oudenaarde, each establishment is supplied by the same caterer. Salmonella contamination was confirmed.
The origin of the contamination remains unknown
According to Joris Moonens, spokesman for the Agency for Care and Health of the Flemish region, “a few cases” required hospitalization. Salmonellosis has been confirmed so far in 129 children. This poisoning causes fevers, diarrhea and vomiting. Recovery usually occurs after 4 to 7 days. As a precaution, the company located in Harelbeke and supplying meals to schools has been closed. Analyzes are underway to identify the source of the contamination.
