After the Barbie with the Pink Ribbon, created to raise awareness about breast cancer, Mattel is launching “Barbie Chemotherapy”, to help sick children overcome their cancer.
But who is Ella?
This bald barbie has recently been the buzz on the internet. It was created in 2011, by the famous toy maker Mattel, but in very small quantities. The idea was to distribute Ella in certain American hospitals, a dozen per hospital, to bring happiness to little girls suffering from cancer.
More “chemo barbie” thanks to a petition
The parents of one of the sick, a four-year-old girl named Grace, launched a petition on change.org, calling for more dolls to be produced, to bring comfort to more children.
And with over 100,000 signatures, they won. Ella, also known under the name of “Barbie Chemotherapy”, will therefore be distributed more widely from the summer, around the world. With her wigs and fancy accessories, she is a beautiful Barbie so that sick children can continue to identify with their heroine.
Research funds
Mattel also indicated that part of the profits from the sale of the Barbie would be donated to cancer research organizations. A great initiative, but also a tremendous publicity stunt for the American group, which wishes to emphasize to the public its image as a responsible and united company, and to ward off recurring reviews on the treatment of its workers.
Either way, the doll should provide valuable support to children with cancer, but also to their parents. They will be able to better explain the disease and the treatment to them, with Ella’s help.
