He is only a few years old but already looks like an old man. In Bangladesh, a little boy suffers from a mysterious illness, AFP reports. He was admitted to Dhaka University Hospital, where doctors agreed to diagnose his disease and take care of it free of charge, given the modest income of this farming family.
Diagnostic wandering
The child was born with excess skin, which hangs down from his limbs and face, giving him the appearance of an old man. He also suffers from heart, hearing and vision problems related to this disease. The family saw many doctors, but none were able to make a diagnosis.
“We sold our land for treatment in local hospitals,” explained the parents, quoted by AFP. We took him to healers, we tried natural herbal treatments, but it didn’t change anything. This hospital is our last hope ”.
A case of progeria?
Progeria, a disease that causes premature aging soon after birth, is among the avenues being investigated. It has been mentioned by several doctors but the Dhaka team remains cautious: progeria is characterized by accelerated aging over time, while according to the parents, the process has recently stopped.
Doctors also believe that the disease may be linked to a case of consanguinity, with marriages between family members being common in rural Bangladesh.
At the hospital, the child will undergo a series of analyzes to try to better understand his illness. It is in this same hospital that a 26-year-old Bangladeshi man nicknamed “the tree man” is also treated because of his impressive bark-like warts on his hands and feet.
