According to the Food & Families Observatory, price is the main obstacle to a balanced diet for families.
- For more than half of French people, eating healthy and balanced means favoring vegetables, homemade cooking and seasonal products.
- For most adults, food is expressed through taste and gluttony, but also in moments of conviviality.
In 2022, inflation in France has soared. This is why citizens are forced to adapt their habits in the face of rising prices. According the third edition of the Food & Family Observatory, presented by the Nestlé France Foundation in partnership with Ipsos, 55% of adults believe that eating a balanced diet is too expensive. For 32% of French people, price is a major concern for meals. “24% plan to spend less on food in the next 6 months”, can we read in the results of the report.
Health is always one of the concerns associated with food
Although “eating well” is threatened by inflation, respondents still want to continue to maintain a balanced diet. For 29% of them, eating healthy appears to be the priority criterion ahead of the pleasure criterion. Price comes third (14%), ahead of eating responsibly (12%), eating together (12%) and finally eating ethically (9%). “This health-related concern is particularly strong in older populations, with a score of 35% among 50-65 year olds, and 30% among 35-49 year olds.”
5 compromises to manage the food budget
In order to continue to adopt a balanced and varied diet, some French people will have to make budgetary choices. In the list of compromises, we find the fact of getting products on sale (81%), buying fewer superfluous products (75%), cooking more leftovers (72%), reducing dining out or the consumption of fast food (72%) and favor private labels (68%).
Food remains a topic of family discussion.
According to the report, 77% of parents say they often discuss food with their children. They revealed that food waste was the number one topic of conversation. However, parents and children also discuss recycling, sorting, healthy eating, recipes, cooking, homemade and healthy eating together. “While parents pay particular attention to the health criterion, the younger generation seems more concerned about issues related to ethical and responsible eating.”
