An Australian study shakes up preconceived ideas: lower back pain has no relation to the weather and it is not accentuated by bad weather.
We often hear that lower back pain is related to the weather, or that humidity can make back pain worse. But Australian researchers have shown the opposite, in a study published in the journal Arthritis Care and Research.
Neither the rain nor the cold
By comparing the condition of 993 patients, with weather data for the week and month prior to the day of medical treatment, the researchers concluded that neither temperature, precipitation, nor humidity caused the symptoms of the disease. back pain. The wind speed could increase the pain slightly, but this was not clinically significant.
Most people think that the weather affects their symptoms, causing the pain, or making it worse. Researchers show that this idea is unfounded. They nevertheless specify that the impact of the weather on certain very specific diseases, such as fibromyalgia, which can cause back pain, should be investigated.
Work more than the weather
Back pain is one of the most common ailments in adults, so much so that it is often referred to as the “disease of the century”. Lower back pain still affects more than 10% of the world’s population.
The origin of the evil comes rather from the working conditions. Carrying heavy loads, being under intense stress, having bad posture are all risk factors. Moreover, farmers are four times more affected than the rest of the population, due to the physical nature of their work.
Another possibility, muscle damage linked to shocks or violent movements can also be responsible for the pain. And contrary to popular belief, after a period of rest, it is advisable to resume physical activity quickly, so that the muscles get back into motion and quickly resume normal functioning.
However, there are as many back pain as there are patients. The causes are therefore varied, as are the treatments, which can range from medical massage, to physiotherapy session, including taking anti-inflammatory drugs.
On the other hand, one thing is certain, no weather case in there.
