A new electric roadster from Audi
Audi brings us one step closer to the future that Hollywood promised us back in the 1990s. Although: for now this is still a study model for which there are no concrete production plans. The new Audi Skysphere can actually transform from a long GT into a shorter sports car. The wheelbase can extend by 250 millimeters from size RS 5 to size Audi A8 L.
The total length of the new Audi Skysphere is up to 5.19 meters – huge for a convertible. In the shorter sport mode, the car is 4.94 meters long. The design of the Audi Skysphere is inspired by that of the Horch 853. There have been rumors before that the old car brand Horch would become a sub-brand of Audi, but this may be the effect of that.
No fat V8
As you probably already suspected, the Audi Skysphere is fully electric. According to the brand, this is the first of three new concept cars that “reflect Audi’s vision of the progressive luxury of the future.” Next year we will see the Audi Grandsphere and the Urbansphere. The name refers to the interior that surrounds the occupants.
Specifications Audi Skysphere
Thanks to an electric motor of 620 hp and 750 Nm, a 0-100 time of 4 seconds is possible, according to Audi’s calculations. The total weight should be 1,800 kilos, which is not too bad for an electric car of this size. The range should be 500 kilometers, thanks to an 80-kWh battery pack and despite the huge 23-inch rims.
Autonomous functions of the Audi Skysphere
The convertible could drive completely independently. When the Audi does the job, the occupants can watch a movie or hold a Zoom meeting, according to Audi. Sustainability has of course been taken into account: for the interior, the brand uses sustainable microfibres, synthetic imitation leather and sustainably produced natural materials such as eucalyptus wood. We do not consider it very likely that Audi will produce the Skysphere in this form. Although we once thought that about the Audi RSQ iRobot – and that eventually became the R8.
