For owners of the 32-year-old Game Boy, there’s good news, you can do something unique with the device.
Today’s video game consoles are no longer comparable to those of the past. They have been developed into multifunctional entertainment hubs. Allowing gamers to stream movies, chat with friends and do much more than just play games. How different is the 32-year-old Game Boy. This was and is a game machine, which you can really only play games with. Until now then.
Attention Game Boy owners
Sebastian Staacks has found a way to expand the possibilities, including a possible way to watch movies. If you then wanted to have a headache, because it doesn’t look like it.
The Game Boy was powered by a Sharp LR35902 processor running at just 4.19MHz. By comparison, the speed of processors in modern smartphones is now measured in GHz, which means it simply doesn’t have the power needed to decode and render in a compressed manner. Already earlier this month there was a message from Staacks. In it, he wrote that he has successfully built a WiFi Game Boy cartridge, which relies on a wireless ESP8266 microchip. This in addition to several other components attached to a custom PCB. The conversion is therefore not very simple, but you can read more on his blog.
Watching a movie
Further technical details will follow, but what is more interesting are the images. In it you see an original unmodified Game Boy using the modified Wi-Fi cartridge. This to stream Star Wars compressed to only 160 x 144 pixels and running at 20 frames per second. That it is possible is already an achievement. You don’t have to do it for the quality, check it out below.
