At 76, the French as a whole are in the same state of health and form as an “average” inhabitant of the earth at 65. According to a study published on March 7 by The Lancet and taken up by ScienceDaily, only the Swiss and the Japanese do better than the French.
Are you 76? Your state of health is comparable to that observed on average at age 65 for all human beings. Ten years of winning! By way of comparison, an inhabitant of the United States reaches this stage of aging at only 68.5 years (54th in the world). And a 51.6-year-old Afghan or a 53.6-year-old Central African Republican is as “old” as the global benchmark of 65.
This is the result of a study conducted by researchers at the University of Washington. They measured between 1990 and 2017 the “age-related disease burden”.
The objective of this study was to measure the societal impacts of an increase in life expectancy. “Age-related health problems can lead to early retirement, a reduced workforce and higher health care costs,” said lead author Dr. Angela Chang.
