After eating a tangerine contaminated with Furadan, a pesticide banned in Argentina, a 12-year-old girl died. The autopsy has revealed that this toxic product was indeed the cause of his death.
A pesticide still used in plantations?
As the girl was walking in Mburucuyá, a town in the province of Corrientes, she picked up a tangerine, which she shared with her brother. Both were taken from vomiting but the girl’s condition deteriorated rapidly. She died before being transferred to the hospital. How to explain the presence of this pesticide, however banned? According to Osvaldo Ojeda, the prosecutor in charge of the investigation, it could be used to fight against the proliferation of birds in a tangerine plantation. The fruits, which came from the northeast of the country, could have landed in Mburucuyá after falling from a transport truck. The investigators collect testimonies to discover the identity of the person in charge.
This is not the first time that the Furadan has been talked about in South America: last July, it caused the death of 200 dogs in an Argentinian village. This pesticide has also been banned in France since 2008 because of its toxicity.
