Apple is also working on a foldable device and will use e-ink displays for that. Read here what those are.
Several tech companies already have foldable devices. Apple not yet, but that doesn’t mean anything. The company is testing e-ink color screens, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. These then come in a foldable iPad and iPhone.

The e-ink display would then be used for the outside. It is therefore a small screen that can give you important information, so that you can always see it. Think of the time, or incoming notifications. The big advantage of such a screen is that it consumes much less energy.
Kuo speaks about E Ink’s Electronic Paper Display (EPD). These are screens that you can compare with the well-known screens that are in eReaders. It looks like paper. The advantage of this is that it is also easy to read in sunlight and because it saves your battery. The image quality is a bit less, but it doesn’t have to be perfect either. If you do want this, open your device.
Competitors
The competitors are already a lot further. Samsung has the Galaxy Z Flip and it has a 1.9-inch OLED screen. Here you can see the time and notifications. So Apple opts for a different screen. The company is said to be planning to launch a 9-inch foldable device first. This device must then be in between the iPhone and iPad.
Kuo thinks Apple will initially focus on medium-sized devices. After that, the company will provide even bigger and smaller screens for foldable devices. Then such a screen is very useful. You don’t want to open the device all the time if you just want to check the time. Apple realizes this all too well.
