DNA fragments of porcine circovirus types 1 and 2 have been reported in several lots of the Rotarix and Rotateq vaccines, two vaccines used in infants to prevent gastroenteritis caused by rotavirus infections.
Swine viruses identified in several batches of Rotarix and Rotateq vaccines are commonly present in some meats and food products. According to Afssaps, they do not cause any disease in humans.
But while awaiting the results of the European assessment on the presence of these fragments, Afssaps recommends not to use the Rotarix vaccine and to remain vigilant on the use of the Rotateq vaccine.
Note, Afssaps reports that the final results of the evaluation will be known next July.
