To eat fruits every day would be beneficial for health, we are told enough. But it is less likely that they have an impact on the risk of aneurysm rupture. The abdominal aortic aneurysm is an abnormal dilation of the aorta that increases its risk of rupture. In 80% of cases this rupture is fatal.
Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and Uppsala University have tested the benefits of fruit on more than 80,000 adults aged 46 to 84. This long-term study published in the scientific journal Circulation lasted thirteen years. During all these years, scientists have scrutinized the fruit and vegetable consumption of volunteers.
The results confirm that the more fruit you eat, the lower the risk of aneurysm rupture. Three fruits per day lowered the risk by 44% in those who ate this diet compared to people who ate no more than 5 fruits per week. Consumption of two fruits per day also had a positive role in being associated with a decrease in the risk of aneurysm by 25%.
This virtuous circle is even more true among men and precisely men who smoke, moreover, one of the categories most at risk of aneurysm rupture. However, “everyone should consume the recommended amount of fruit and vegetables daily, not just smokers,” says Dr Stackelberg, interviewed by Le Figaro.
Men are 13 times more affected than women by this pathology, which generally occurs after 65 years. And tobacco is one of the risk factors.
Researchers believe that consuming fruit, without recommending certain fruits in particular, has a positive impact on blood pressure. But we have few explanations. Fruits still have other secrets to reveal.
